What Superstars Do When A Merger Or Takeover Comes Knocking At Their Office Door

What Superstars Do When A Merger Or Takeover Comes Knocking At Their Office Door

“Your profession is what you were put on earth to do with such passion and intensity it becomes spiritual”
Van Gogh

Jeff had been with his company for twenty-five years.  When he walked into the conference room to meet with the new group, he was confident.  He was a member of the acquiring company.
As the meeting continued, he realized for the first time in eight months that he was clueless.  He thought with 25 years of loyalty he knew what his future was—he had nothing to prove.   He was safe.
Until he looked around the room and realized he was the only one who obvioulsy had no allies. He felt betrayed, foolish and angry.  Was there a conspiracy? Had they left him out in the cold on purpose?
With a masters degree, a relentless work ethic, and company loyalty–rising from a blue collar background to be somebody–he didn’t know who to turn to, who he could take his frustration out on.

The only person in charge of your career is you.  The company is not responsible for your success, ascent or descent. So now that a take-over or merger is about to happen, what do you do? These things take time, it won’t happen over night.  So you have time.  What do you do first?

What do superstars do?
Invest in yourself. Join professional associations and attend the meetings.  What is happening in other people’s worlds? No? Good idea to start now. If you haven’t helped other people before—you might want to start now. Generosity goes a long way. And if you don’t know what to say, start with, “So how are things going in your business?”.
From a fiduciary perspective, when a company is sold, the CEO and senior executives who were part of the merger conversations cannot tell you anything. If they do, it would be a breach of their fiduciary responsibility.  Their first obligation is to the organization–the stockholders or equity partners, not you.
Who are aligned with? The power players? And do they like you?  Are you on the right team?  Will they go to bat for you?  Superstars are lining up figuring out who will be on what team when the merger happens.  If you aren’t in the room claiming your seat at the table, guess what?
Start volunteering.  Figure out something you are interested in and enjoy that will bring out the best in you.  For example, my sons are involved in crew so this year I’m the Parent Coordinator for Columbia University’s Crew team, Lightweights. I don’t have lots of free time, but I’m around young people, get to see my children and meet the other parents. It’s the best I can do this year.
Don’t take a merger personally, it is business. Even though this is your life, it’s a business this is happening to—and I know how tough that is when it’s happening to you. But it’s better for you to be prepared before something happens than to have it happen to you after the fact.
Everyone can be replaced. Before Rahm Emanuel took his job as Chief of Staff, he called all of his predecessors and asked for advice.  He wrote down their words of wisdom on an index card and carries it around in his pocket.  One of the things Karl Rove told Rahm Emanuel was, “find your replacement immediately.” Think of Rahm or Karl telling you to find your replacement in a merger if that helps.
Keep your eyes open, be a pragmatist. Don’t stay for a short term bonus when you may suddenly find yourself out of a job and unable to find employment.  Don’t leave without a job. Remember, you have a lot more leverage when you have a job than when you don’t.

Good luck superstar!

Post Now: Shot fired at Coast Guard recruiting office in Va. – Washington Post

At least one gunshot was fired at a U.S. Coast Guard recruiting center in Northern Virginia overnight, and investigators from the FBI and Prince William County were trying to learn Tuesday morning whether the shooting was related to a recent series of shots fired into U.S. military facilities.

No injuries were reported.

The shot or shots were fired either late Monday or early Tuesday, hit a window, and were discovered Tuesday morning at the center at 2721 Potomac Mills Circle in Woodbridge, said First Sgt. Kim Chinn, spokeswoman for Prince William police.

“We don’t know if it’s related to the others until we get ballistics results,” Chinn said Tuesday morning.

Chinn said she didn’t know how many bullets hit the stand-alone facility or if they went through a window.

The unexplained spree of shootings began the night of Oct. 16 or into the next morning when bullets were fired at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle. In the days after, ballistics evidence has shown, the same weapon was used to shoot at the Pentagon and an unoccupied Marine Corps recruiting center in Chantilly. In each case, windows were struck. The museum again was targeted overnight Thursday.

FBI officials released a limited profile of the suspect after he or she shot again at the Marine Corps museum near Quantico — the same place the shooter started.

FBI officials also tried to coax the shooter to contact them, promising to try to resolve whatever is bothering him or her.

Buy Stun Guns From Companies Who Provide Self Defense Supplies

The video showed a big man being knocked down by the stun gun of a policeman. The man fell down with only a few seconds of contact. That spurred our discussion whether we needed to have stun guns of our own or not.

With the way society is going, almost everybody said aye. For this reason, we began to look for proper stun guns from those who sell self defense supplies. We can get to them more swiftly through the internet.

Among the first ones that got our attention was the Hottie Stun Gun because some of us have girlfriends. Its color is pink, it is small in size, but it has a powerful 1 million volts of power.

There is no need to buy batteries because it has a rechargeable battery. It also has a flashlight with 6 LED lights. Surely, of all the stun guns, this will gain approval from the ladies.

The Rechargeable Stun Gun Flashlight also attracted our attention. Although made for the police and security guards, we can use them as well. Aside from the powerful 600,000 volt stun gun, it is also a heavy-duty halogen flashlight and a loud 130 db alarm. It is powered by a rechargeable battery and is 15 inches long, allowing a safe distance from the aggressor.

As we continued searching from those who sell self defense supplies, we came to another device, the Mini Stun Baton. At 1 million volts, this has the highest voltage in mini stun batons available.

It also has a rechargeable battery and is 10.5 inches long. Just 3 to 5 seconds of contact with this model is enough to knock down any aggressor.

And then we also took interest in the smallest of stun guns, the Small Fry Stun Gun – The Blackout. It is small in size only but not in its power to stop anybody. Its battery is rechargeable and its stopping power is 1 million volts.

Jule C Thacks is one of the leading experts on non-lethal self defense products. There are many choices, not limited to stun guns, pepper sprays and personal alarms. He delivers full support and instruction on how to use the products.
