If you see a group of employees doing all they can to reach a universal goal that benefits everybody, then it is clear to see that teamwork is truly present in them. Though companies and businesses definitely realize the value of teamwork, it can sometimes be tough implementing it and ingraining this culture in employees, at least at first.
One possible reason is that most people have been taught all their lives to be successful alone and separately from others. Since we were young, most of us were raised to be the best we can be, and that meant doing everything we could to be better than everybody else. We were asked to beat the others in our way to glory, and it made it seem like everything is all right in the world if we did win.
Although retreats and team-building seminars help a lot in making the workplace more harmonious, the fact that things can still go back to where they were only goes to show that these can still be insufficient in some sense. Rather, it is only one of the ways to promote teamwork.
There are several guidelines people could follow to achieve teamwork within their organization:
* Assign a facilitator for each team – Remember that this is a practice of merging together diverse ideas, plans and styles. A capable facilitator may help in the easier flow of conversations in meetings.
* Have regular meetings to monitor their progress – With regular meetings, the group will be able to digest and coordinate shared work processes.
* Identify if it is a personality issue – If the problem lies on personality differences, these should be primarily addressed, staying within the persons involved and not the whole group because this may sidetrack the team from the main issues of the company.
* Create fun and exciting activities for the group – Let the teams engage themselves in sports, hiking or by forming cheer fans for sporting events in the company. Involve them in a meaningful fund raising event that may also be beneficial for the teams.
* Make monthly meetings more entertaining – Activities like 5-minute “getting to know you” games help participants look at another person’s personality through a totally different light.
* Rejoice over team achievements together as a group – Success, whether big or small, must be celebrated with enthusiasm. Buy the same t-shirts, place their names in a cute object and distribute it to every team member. Or better yet, reward them with incentives or bonuses. A surefire way of building team spirit.
Due to this, companies think that teamwork is still the general rule one should follow to be more effective. The thing falls to striking a balance to make the engine running.
